Our Favourite Things: My Barn Board Feature Wall
by Real Estate Sales Representative Ally VanderHarst
My husband & I have been living in our current home for nearly 4 years but I still struggle to make any decorating decisions for fear that I will change my mind as soon as I commit. The spare bedrooms in our home have been some of the last rooms to get any consideration when it comes to fresh paint & home decor and as a result, are still the same boring beige colour that was left behind by the previous owners.
Well, I am pleased to say that I finally made a decision for one of these rooms, and I am SUPER happy with the results. I recruited my handy husband Jeff to put together a beautiful barn board accent wall and it looks gorgeous!
Other than the fact that it’s beautiful, another reason I love this wall is because the wood was reclaimed from my sister-in-law & late brother-in-law’s old farm house floors. It has some sentimental value for us both as well and that makes it just a little more special than most pallet walls.
To create this masterpiece, Jeff ripped the floorboards down to size so they would all be the same width, sanded them up to get rid of any rough edges and started sticking them up via the pre-installed strapping which was spaced out evenly along the wall. We used a combination of 4 different board lengths and put them up in a random order to create the pattern.
We debated between a few finishes of white wash, stain, or a clear urethane but ultimately decided we liked the natural look best and went with the clear coat. It brought out the grains and darkened the wood up a bit to really make it pop!
If you’re feeling inspired and would like to make your own wood feature wall, here are some basic guides you can use:
– Strap the wall out on 16 inch centres for something to attach your boards to.
– Boards were cut to 16 inches, 32 inches, 48 inches, and 64 inches
Now that we’ve got the feature wall complete – it’s time for me to pick the rest of the decor!
